About the Author
Fenella Jane Miller was born in the Isle of Man. Her father was a Yorkshire man and her mother the daughter of a Rajah. She has worked as a nanny, cleaner, field worker,hotelier,chef, secondary and primary teacher and is now a full time writer. She has over twenty five Regency romantic adventures published plus one Jane Austen re-telling and one YA romantic fantasy. She lives in a pretty, riverside village in Essex with her husband and ancient Border Collie. She has two adult children and two grandchildren.

Enjoyable wartime drama

Set just before the Second World War took a firm hold, this is a coming-of-age novel about Barbara Sinclair. It is a well-composed story; it seems to meander along quite gently, but every now and then pathos, darkness, and drama taps you on the shoulder and gives you quite a jump!
Barbara is half-sister to two younger brothers; she is desperately unhappy at home and finds solace and comfort in her unquestioning mare, Silver, and her long-time friend, John. Her acceptance of his offer of marriage just before he goes off to train for combat is typical of her caring and loving nature; she couldn't possibly send the young man off to war unhappy. The dramatic events of one particular evening lead her to seek out her dead father's relatives with whom, after a tentative start, she settles. It is also where she meets Alex, who throws her emotions into a whirl, and Simon, who isn't quite what he seems.
Barbara is very definitely the driver of this story and her development from a gentle, dominated, but well-liked young girl in her late teens, to a more mature, assertive, and attractive one is solid and well conceived. Fenella is adept at evoking the apprehension of the wartime atrocities to come, of portraying the emotions of a somewhat dysfunctional family and at climaxing the story with an unexpected turn of events. Her characters leap out of the page: I could see them all, from Barbara's young innocent and impressionable brothers, her starchy grandmother, her cold and unfeeling stepfather and the young, brave and eager John, ready and willing to fight for his country, to the jaunty young Alex, and Simon's somewhat shady father. A good author doesn't make her reader struggle to image her characters and Fenella does this expertly.
A very enjoyable, captivating novel of the period; I hope Barbara will take us on her journey to womanhood soon!

A Lovely read!

While I utterly adore historical fiction I find that my preference for the genre is in those novels set before the 1900s, so when I got the review request for Barbara's War I saw it as a lovely opportunity to read something out of my comfort zone with this being set against the backdrop of World War II.
I really enjoyed reading Barbara's War. It gave a wonderfully realistic glimpse into days of time gone by. Life was so much simpler then in that era and while there are certain things that I couldn't do without, the picture that Fenella J. Miller paints was lovely despite the wartime backdrop.
I thought that the characters were very developed. Barbara was a refreshing character. She was a little naïve at times but hey, we all have those moments. I really felt for her in this book because she didn't have a great home life which is where we start off in the book seeing her go from a meek young woman to a more self aware and confident which is what I like to see. Plus it's what needed to happen especially with critical times in the war about to happen.
I liked the other characters in the book at all especially Barbara's grandfather. He added a lot to the story to offset the romance brewing between Barbara and her suitors. Yes, I said suitors 3 of them in fact and no I'm not going to tell you who she ended up with because this story was so wonderful you have to read it yourself.
Overall, I had a great experience with reading my first Fenella J. Miller book. I thought she brought the time period to life and wrote a realistic tale of love, life and personal growth with great characters.
I would recommend Barbara's War to fans of historical fiction with a romantic twist and drama set during World War II. The pacing is good and I think if you have an afternoon to yourself you could delight in reading it curled up with a cup of tea.

Lovely Sweet Wartime Romance.

It is wartime Britain as Barbara's heart-wrenching story begins to unravel. Hearing news of young men and women enlisting in the armed forces and that of civil organisations she's intrigued and excited by sense of adventure. Although wishing to do her bit for the war effort she fears the wrath of her mother, and during one of her mother's dreadful onslaughts a hidden truth is revealed. Barbara can bear the pain no longer and finally flees from the family home despite her beloved stepbrothers and her horse sadly left behind. Also left in her wake is a young pilot officer whose heart is hers if only she could see her way to accepting it. She therefore has much to ponder.
Determined to locate grandparents she never knew she had and contact soon established, her life is about to change for the better, or is it? Nonetheless allies, friends and loved ones render her life complete for the moment. That is, until news from home shatters her relatively peaceful existence and she finds herself playing mother and sister to her beloved stepbrothers. So too, young men in uniform abound, some of good intentions, others not, and hard lessons are learned along Barbara's wartime path. One fearful experience chills her heart, and a white knight from her past steps centre stage to take command of the situation. Utterly unwilling to let her escape him again, she's facing a yes or no dilemma.
Barbara's War is a thoroughly enchanting sweet romance.
