Robert Kroese’s Disenchanted comes fully loaded with the wit and charm of The Princess Bride and a sense of humor all its own. This clever take on the traditional fantasy includes footnotes that keep the narrator honest, a cast of characters that resembles something out of the Island of Misfit Toys, and a fantastic setting filled with words and names that test pronunciation skills.
Being assassinated doesn't have many upsides, so when King Boric is felled by a traitor, the king comforts himself with the knowledge that, like all great warriors, he will spend eternity carousing in the Hall of Avandoor. There's just one problem: to claim his heavenly reward, Boric must release the enchanted sword of Brakslaagt.
Now, to avoid being cursed to walk the land of Dis forever as an undead wraith, he must hunt down the mysterious Lord Brand who gave him the sword twenty years ago. So begins Boric's extraordinary journey across the Six Kingdoms of Dis, a walking corpse who wants nothing more than to be disenchanted and left in peace. Along the way he's advised by the Witch of Twyllic, mocked by the threfelings of New Threfelton, burned, shot at, and nearly blown to bits. But nothing can prepare him for coming face-to-face with Lord Brand. For in that moment, Boric discovers that nothing—in life, in death, or in between—is exactly what it seems.

Review
“Robert Kroese’s Disenchanted kept me laughing and laughing.” —Boing Boing
About the Author
Robert Kroese’s sense of irony was honed growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan—home of the Amway Corporation and the Gerald R. Ford Museum, and the first city in the United States to fluoridate its water supply. In the second grade he wrote his first novel—the saga of Captain Bill and his spaceship, Thee Eagle. This turned out to be the high point of his academic career. After barely graduating from Calvin College in 1992 with a philosophy degree, he was fired from a variety of jobs before moving to California, where he stumbled into software development. As this job required neither punctuality nor a sense of direction, he excelled at it. In 2009 he called upon his extensive knowledge of useless information and love of explosions to write his first novel, Mercury Falls. Mercury Rests, his third book, concludes the trilogy.

Warriors! Battles! Jokes! To be continued?
By Justin G.
With his latest novel, author Rob Kroese steps away from the rogue angels and apocalyptic mayhem of his wickedly funny Mercury Trilogy (see Mercury Falls) for a fresh look at the epic fantasy genre. In Disenchanted, we're introduced to Boric the Implacable, who, um, dies right at the beginning of the book. Before Boric's soul can be escorted to this world's equivalent of Valhalla (by a winged bear!), he's got to figure out how to beat a nasty curse on his magic sword that could leave him a zombie-like wraith for all eternity. Hilarity ensues. Well, blood-drenched, ogre-killing epic fantasy hilarity, but still...
Disenchanted is published as a Kindle Serial, so you're not getting a full novel here, at least not yet. The idea is that once you buy the first installment, additional installments will be sent to your Kindle (at no extra charge) as they are published. At the end of the serial (six installments in this case), you'll have one full novel. I guess it's not too far removed from what Stephen King did back when the Green Mile was originally published. It's an interesting concept, and one that would probably work brilliantly for ongoing sagas like The Dead Man. For stand-alone novels like this one, however, I don't know that anything is gained by the format.
Anyway, on to the story, which, like previous Kroese novels, is funny to the point of being ridiculous and still has a really good story (or at least the potential for one; it's hard to say based only on the first installment) hiding under all the jokes. It's not as laugh out loud funny as the Mercury books, but that's probably because pop culture jokes are off the table in the fantasy genre. Kroese seems very aware of the genres stereotypes and limitations (such as a ridiculous amount of hard to pronounce and easy to forget names and places) and has some fun with that. The book alternates between Boric's past adventures that brought him to this fate and his quest for a way into the warriors' afterlife, and that transition is handled pretty well.
If you're a fan of Kroese's previous novels, then chances are you'll enjoy Disenchanted as well. It's off to a good start anyway. I suppose I'll have to come back and update this review as additional chapters are published, but so far I'm enjoying the ride.
Update 01/16/13 - The final installment is available, so if you order now you'll get the whole book in one shot. The rest of the book continued along the same lines as the opening installment. It's never laugh out loud funny, and it's not as meaty as the average fantasy novel, but it works for what it is, and it's a fun, light read.

Amusing story
By EllenB
Who would think a story where the hero (of sorts, he definitely has his flaws!) dies at the beginning, and spends the rest of the time trying to move on before he's doomed to remain undead forever, would be so amusing. Suicidal sheep, a few caustic comments on the difference in attitudes between women and men, an 'epic' tale of kingdoms and wars to boot!
I don't recall actually laughing out loud, but I sure did a lot of grinning, with a few snorts and snickers. A good light read with some 'morals to the story' if you care to consider them. I definitely recommend it, and would read others by this author.
Don't let the 'low' rating concern you, I'd give it 3 1/2 if I could, and I'm refusing to give 5 unless I come across something truly spectacular, since I see so many books with scores of those that they surely don't deserve, so that personally I tend to read the lower star ratings for a more honest review.

A decent read.
By James Lacy
If you are a fan of Robert Kroese's Mercury trilogy, go ahead and buy this serial. It's exactly what you are thinking it's going to be.
If you haven't read the Mercury triology, stop reading this review and go buy that instead. Seriously.
This serial is a solid read with Kroese's trademark humor and irreverence applied to a Swords and Sorcery setting, however it isn't quite as good as his other works.
