New York, 1799: the future looks bright for the charming young book dealer William Lacy, until a raucous night of drinking lands him in shackles. He narrowly avoids the brutal prison system thanks to his mother, who negotiates with the judge to secure him a five year apprenticeship in lieu of a prison sentence. And so William finds himself in a carriage bound for the remote woods upstate, where he'll spend the next years of his life learning a new trade under some old master.
When he first sees Merrick, William thinks he's been dropped into a medieval horror story. Tall and gruff, dressed in a hooded robe that completely conceals his features, and riding a black mare, Merrick might as well be the Grim Reaper.
But appearances are deceiving. An uncannily skilled apothecary and healer, Merrick proves to be a generous host and a gentle teacher, and William soon finds himself surprisingly comfortable in his new surroundings. Yet troubling mysteries abound: Why does Merrick never show his face or hands? Why do his movements seem so young and sure beneath his robes? What lies within the cave behind the stone cottage?
Something unnatural is afoot. But most alarming by far is William's own reaction to his new master. For Merrick's strange charms are bewitching enough by day; but by night, in the darkness of the room and the bed they share, William finds himself entirely overwhelmed by desires he never imagined...

My Lucky Day
By Deepstar Run
After spending as much as five bucks for a 'novelette' and mucking through typos and generally bad editing, I was almost stunned to get such wonderful quality out of a 99 cent book. Even the cover art, though simple, is better than most.
This was a sexy fairytale with likable main characters, a nice sense of anticipation, and an honest to god plot that wasn't overwhelmed by too many sex scenes. It wasn't terribly original but definitely kept my interest and rewarded my willingness to take a chance on an unknown author with no reviews to recommend her work. The description included is accurate enough so I won't go into a long recounting.
Ms. Cray's writing was articulate and entertaining, drawing me into the story quickly. It was not bogged down with unnecessary details or overwrought emotions. I liked that the men managed to be both masculine and sensitive, which is a delicate balance often lacking in m/m romances.
The only criticism I have is that it ended a bit abruptly, obviously requiring a continuation.
I don't know whether to be grateful for the value Ms. Cray has provided me or irritated at other more well known authors for charging me a premium and not providing a better product.

gothic romance
By Furio
The first chapters of this M/M vampire romance belong in a gothic anthology: there are a tension and a suspense that seem to promise a masterpiece. We also have the young lead facing adversities and a dark future he does not deserve, an essential part of any gothic tale.
Unfortunately narrative tension decreases quickly. The quality of writing remains high but it is as if the author uncovered her cards too quickly. Suspense all but gone and plot close to non existent, all that remains are the two likeable leads and their growing passion. The exciting gothic story evolves into a pleasing M/M romance: it is always interesting but perhaps less than expected.
The novel is self contained but there are openings for a sequel. Sex scenes are not many and not particularly graphic. Characterization is consistent even if it strikes me as a bit off for William to be so torn about his new gay feelings and so very unconcerned about the death of innocent people (vampires kill here, as it happens in some of Ms Rice's novels whose corpus is explicitly quoted, "Merrick being the title of one of her volumes).
A few typos should be corrected as they clash with a generally well edited work.
This volume is currently inexpensive and surely worth a read.

Merrick by Claire Cray
By Elisa
Considering the setting, 1799, quite original just like that, and the plot device, a young man sent as endured servant for 5 years, I was expecting for this story to be very gothic like, dark and brooding, maybe even a little dramatic.
So it was with a little surprise that, page after page, I was discovering a romantic story, almost a sweet romance, with a kind Master who seemed more interested in taking care of his servant than using him; my prejudices almost pushed me to believe the Master was some sort of ogre and that he was fattening up the servant, but do not worry, this wasn’t the case.
Anyway, William is really a clever boy, even if only 18 years old, he had already his business as bookseller, but he had bad companies, and he ended up to pay for all his fellow mates. Merrick, his Master, is some sort of hermit, a well-respected apothecary who hides his features behind a cloak he doesn’t remove neither in front of William. But he is gentle and kind, and he treats William in a good way, so much that William starts to believe his bad fate isn’t so bad after all, and even if he has never been interested in men, now that he is in close proximity with Merrick, he is very much attracted by the man: another device plot I was used in my old fashioned romance novels, William falls for Merrick without even knowing his looks, he falls in love for the kind man who is behind the cloak, not for a pretty face.
A some sort of Beauty and the Beast, also here there is a reason for Merrick to hide himself, and William will have to prove that he loves Merrick despite all.
