Of the Doomed and "Virgins By Intent"

Of Steinbeck's short stories, I wonder if "The Red Pony" is perhaps the best known, or at least the most widely read in high school or college literature survey courses? Or perhaps that distinction belongs to "The Chrysanthemums." In any event, those are the only two stories from this collection that I can recall having read elsewhere, leaving the other eleven to delight me with their novelty. The "delight," however, is that which comes with the discovery of intensely thought-provoking stories, not, with one exception, the delight that comes from encountering light-hearted, uplifting tales of an optimistic bent, for that is far from Steinbeck's style.

For the most part, the short stories reveal the same dark universe in which unenlightened and certainly unsaved men struggle to survive, a struggle that they occasionally lose, spiritually if not physically. A certain hunger, an unfulfilled need, and a pre-ordained suffering doom most of Steinbeck's characters. Existence is filled with cruel ironies that dash hope upon the vicious and inescapable rocks of reality. We see happiness in a vicarious dream of escaping the entrapment of an unchanging existence dashed by a pile of flowers unceremoniously dumped in the road. A youth's attainment of manhood is marked not by joy but by the guilt of a murder, ruthless pursuit, and a hard rifle bullet. We see the cultural anchor of a town destroyed by an unimaginable sin. And so the stories go.

Apropos of Steinbeck's view of the human condition is the title of the collection. While "the long valley" certainly describes California's Salinas River valley, the general setting for many of Steinbeck's stories, it also suggests the spiritual valley in which his characters typically dwell.

One may argue that the people in Steinbeck's stories bring suffering upon themselves through their own ignorance and unthinking acts. Yet, if we look closely at their intents and motivations, we often see situations unfold that seem to force the characters into the acts that in turn become their undoing. It is as if the Fates play with men and rejoice in their destruction.

Earlier, though, I mentioned an exception to this dark, brooding atmosphere and theme. The exceptional story is "Saint Katy the Virgin." This story is not what one expects to find in Steinbeck. It is a wonderful bit of humorous satire, lightheartedly poking a little fun at some of the tenets of Catholicism. Had Steinbeck written his major novels in this vein, his reputation would have been that of a sublime humorist.

I recommend this collection of short stories to two very different groups of readers, those who have never read Steinbeck before and wish to sample several brief selections before investing their interest in a major novel, and those who have enjoyed Steinbeck's other works already and should not neglect his short stories. All will discover that these stories are fast paced, interest holding, and thought provoking. I believe I shall now go light a candle to Saint Katy the Virgin. My first Steinbeck book! O.K., I should have read "Mice and Men" when it was assigned in the 9th grade, but you know how that goes. The five years I have spent in college have awakened a love of the classics, making Steinbeck essential reading at some point. This book is a collection of his short stories written in 1933-34. In the introduction, written by John Timmerman, we find Steinbeck slaving away on these stories while taking care of his ill mother. We also discover that Steinbeck wrote his stories on a notebook copped from his father's desk. Timmerman points out that "The Long Valley" stories constitute an important bridge between Steinbeck's earlier efforts and the later canon of literature that secured his lasting fame.
The first two stories are the kind of works that English teachers love to assign; they involve women trying to break out of social roles. In the first story, Steinbeck starts his tale with: "The high grey-flannel fog of winter closed off the Salinas Valley from the sky and from all the rest of the world. On every side it sat like a lid on the mountains and made of the great valley a closed pot." Obviously, someone is trapped. I don't care for these two stories because I've read so many like them over the years, usually at the threatening point of a grading pen.
But as the book progresses, I quickly discovered that Steinbeck is an excellent writer. My favorite stories were "The Harness," "Johnny Bear," "Saint Katy the Virgin," and "The Red Pony." In "Johnny Bear," Steinbeck writes a freaky tale about an idiot savant that has an odd talent, much to the chagrin of the community. I figured out how it was going to end ahead of time, but it was still great fun. "Saint Katy the Virgin" is a strange tale, set in the Middle Ages, about a pig who converts to Christianity. This story does seem to be a criticism of the Catholic Church, but there is enough ambiguity in it to make me wonder if the story is actually pro-religion.
"The Red Pony," which is actually a cycle of four stories, has to be the best of the lot. I seriously believe Steinbeck could have made a comfortable living by turning this into a series. The stories focus on Jody, a boy living on a ranch in California. What impressed me most about these stories is the emphasis placed on discipline, hard work, and clean living. Along the way, Jody learns valuable lessons about death, old age, and respect for his elders. While reading about Jody, it is impossible not to draw comparisons with the pampered youth of our era. Almost no child living in this country today could maintain the patience Jody shows while waiting for the birth of his colt.
I thought Steinbeck would be stodgy reading; I was quite worried when I pulled this off the shelf and made a go of it. I can't say I'm going to dive right into his other works right away, but if his other stuff matches up to some of the stories here, they will be good reading.

Perfect collection of short stories

Recently, I have been on a John Steinbeck binge. I am not a lover of short stories, I find them too brief, like a wonderful treat taken away too soon. However, the skill in which Mr. Steinbeck writes each short story represents a condensed novel. They are truly capable of fulfilling the promises of longer novels. Flushed and sifted, he carefully extracts his words into a version just as promising and thought provoking as a longer story. One need not feel unsatisfied, these stories are utterly amazing, absolutely incredible and without doubt some of the best literary work I have ever read.
These are beautiful stories, all taking place around Steinbeck's favorite place on earth, Monterey and Salinas Valley in California. The stories are diverse, rich, stunning and original. Please allow yourself the opportunity to read these stories. You will not be disappointed, and the beauty is to feel the heart and soul of the author, John Steinbeck.

Read This!

This book is definitely one to read if you are in to Action, and a little love.

Grace Morrow lives in the year 2026 a society where people think a little differently. Theres this thing called the barcode prophecy. The Barcode prophecy is where every young man and women when turning the age of 17 must get a barcode tattoo. To her that means becoming an adult. But to others its totally different. Her friend named Eric who she kind of likes works at the Bar code place. Ever sense Graces birthday was getting closer he always seemed against it, even though he already has one. So she has to decide whether or not to get the tattoo. But If you do refuse to be barcoded it seems like an assault to human rights. So when her 17th birthday came, after finally getting the tattoo realizes the truth of the prophecy.

I definitely enjoyed this book because its was easy to read and full of very interesting and exciting in every chapter. This book was one that I couldn't put down, because I had to keep reading to find out what happens next. (5 stars) Written by Emily, 7th grade

A "pass time" book

My initial worry with reading this book was that it would disappoint me like most sequels I have read. Surprisingly, I felt myself enjoying this third book in the Bar Code series more so than the first book.

Grace Morrow, a young woman of seventeen years of age, was not a character I clicked with in the beginning. She's your typical teen heroine with "normal" girl problems like crushes and so forth. This actually bored me upon reading the beginning. My problem with her is that she seems quite complacent with her life. She is a rule follower and does not seemed all that concerned with the loss of personal liberties as long as her family is doing well, but then the book is an exploration of her growth in the surrounding circumstances. In the beginning, Grace is going through the coming of age ritual every seventeen year old in the year 2026 faces: the bar code tattoo. To her, it means adulthood, but to others it means much more. The resistance, which is against the tattoo, sees it as an assault to personal human rights, a humiliation to genetical predestination, and the empowerment of an "evil" corporation that is trying to take over the world. It is after accepting this mark that Grace finally begins her journey towards the truth and her destiny.

Enter Eric Chaka: three-quarters Native American, a rising rock-climbing star, and the hottie of the novel. I like how his heritage is actually explored in the novel, and contributes to the prophetical twist. There seems to be intention to create a romantic relationship between Grace and Eric, but I feel that the storyline flows better when they try to overcome an obstacle together. When it comes to the scenes that are supposed to melt your heart into romantic ooze, Eric fell just a little flat. Eric's strengths and sensibilities lie within the kind buddy scenes. Still, there are a few cheesy moments that brought a smile and a giggle to my face.

There is one moment that kinda feels like the author changed her mind regarding the plot halfway through the story. I was expecting a certain character to be a villain, but at the very last minute he turns out not to be. In fact, the response the potential villain gives to the questioning of his intentions for good deeds was not satisfactory at all. (Read for yourself and see if you can guess to what persona/section I am referring to.)

One thing that this book does effectively is geting you thinking of the effects big corporations have in our lives. I left feeling a certain sense of paranoia tinging the way I view today's conglomerates. The moral of the story undoubtedly points a finger towards "evil" corporations, and reminds us that we are a part of everything and therefore we should respect ourselves and our surroundings.

Format wise, I thought the novel was a bit short to be divided into four sections. Still, I did enjoy the quotations the author included under the division pages; they really played out to each section they were associated with. Another thing I enjoyed was the inclusion of article pieces that gives the reader a bigger perspective of the story. Initially, I thought this might be too interruptive, but it truly gives the story an added dimension.

All in all, this was a book that grew on me. I would classify this book as a good read for a hot summer day. It's a good book for just plain old passing time and/or chillaxin'.

Fast exciting novel

I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. Its pretty short, only about 200 pages, but a very exciting read. The story is of a 17 year old girl, who lives about 20 or so years in the future, where a huge company has designed bar codes for every person to have. The barcodes have all your personal information, your genes, your intelligence level, etc. But also, they inset little nanobots to track your whereabouts and even kill you if they want.

Anyways, there is this prophesy that something crazy bad will happen to the earth due to what we humans have done to the earth. I really liked the way the author incorporated current events (the BP oil spill in 2010, and the current hysteria about the Mayan calendar saying the world will end in 2012...)

So you follow this 17 year old girl, Grace, as she tries to save her family and basically save the world.
The whole romance thing was so far in the background, that when they professed their love for each other I was very surprised... I thought there wouldn't be a romance... bec it was nonexistent throughout the book.

I liked Grace, she was a pretty good heroine, and Eric (the love interest) was a cool guy. But like I said, their interactions were pretty few and far between. Maybe because the book was just too short.

Anyways, overall it was an exciting, fast read. I think it could have been better... but still was enjoyable.

*I have to add, that I didn't realize until I was about to upload my review, that this is actually the THIRD book in a series!!! Maybe I should go back to read the first 2 books to get a better feel for this. Despite that, I didn't feel like I was lacking in anything reading this book without the first two.

Pretty good but really short

This is a short story (really short) that shows us a glimpse of Day and June as 12 year olds. Day's portion is the story of his first kiss and June's part is about her first day as the youngest student at Drake University.

Day's story didn't really do much for me, but I enjoyed June's. I especially loved that we are treated to some Metias and June interaction, since their relationship was one of the things I really liked in Legend. I also appreciated the little in-depth peek into June's character, revealing her insecurities as a child prodigy. I'm not quite sure if I would say this was worth it for the price I paid of $2.99 (I'm leaning towards no) although I thought it was a pretty good (but again, short!) read.

A Reading the Paranormal Review

As short as these two stories are, they do an excellent job of showing both sides of the June/Day equation. Day's rebellious streak is strong despite his injury. He's wary and fierce in the face of the Republic's stranglehold and he's unwilling to put those around him in danger. June is just as rebellious - she just rebels in a different way than Day does. She's trying to fit in but her age and her uncanny abilities put her head and shoulders above those she's going to school with. She doesn't fit in, where Day doesn't want to fit in.

Honestly, these snippets revved my interest in this series back up like WHOA. Because Day and June are kinda awesome and with their big, scary brains they can do most anything.

I always just love these little stories "in between." For example "Free Four" was pretty good too, and I like how there is a bit more detail for just some small scenes.

Soldier-robot teams will be an important component of future battle spaces, creating a complex but potentially more survivable and effective combat force. Human-Robot Interactions in Future Military Operations provides an opportunity for scientists investigating military issues related to HRI to present their results cohesively within a single volume. The issues range from operators interacting with small ground robots and aerial vehicles to supervising large, near-autonomous vehicles capable of intelligent battlefield behaviors. The ability of the human to 'team' with intelligent unmanned systems in such environments is the focus of the volume. As such, chapters are written by recognized leaders within their disciplines and they discuss their research in the context of a broad-based approach. Therefore the book allows researchers from differing disciplines to be brought up to date on both theoretical and methodological issues surrounding human-robot interaction in military environments.

The overall objective of this volume is to illuminate the challenges and potential solutions for military HRI through discussion of the many approaches that have been utilized in order to converge on a better understanding of this relatively complex concept. It should be noted that many of these issues will generalize to civilian applications as robotic technology matures. An important outcome is the focus on developing general human-robot teaming principles and guidelines to help both the human factors design and training community develop a better understanding of this nascent but revolutionary technology.

Much of the research within the book is based on the Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED), U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) 5-year Army Technology Objective (ATO) research program. The program addressed HRI and teaming for both aerial and ground robotic assets in conjunction with the U.S. Army Tank and Automotive Research and Development Center (TARDEC) and the Aviation and Missile Development Center (AMRDEC) The purpose of the program was to understand HRI issues in order to develop and evaluate technologies to improve HRI battlefield performance for Future Combat Systems (FCS). The work within this volume goes beyond the research results to encapsulate the ATO's findings and discuss them in a broader context in order to understand both their military and civilian implications. For this reason, scientists conducting related research have contributed additional chapters to widen the scope of the original research boundaries.

About the Author
Michael Barnes is a Research Psychologist with the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL). For the past five years, he was the lead for the human robotic interaction (HRI) program that included both military and university research as part of an Army Technology Objective: Robotic Collaboration. His past experience includes tenure with the US Navy and as a human factors manager with General Electric. Also, he has served on a number of international committees related to HRI. He has authored or co-authored over 60 articles on the human element of military systems. Located at Ft. Huachuca, AZ, his research interests include investigations of risk visualization, intelligence processes and unmanned aerial vehicles crew systems. Florian Jentsch, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, with joint appointments in the Department of Psychology and the Institute for Simulation & Training. He is also the Director of the Team Performance Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in Human Factors Psychology in 1997, and he holds master’s degrees in aeronautical science and aeronautical engineering. Dr. Jentsch is associate editor for Human Factors and for Cognitive Technology, and consulting editor for the International Journal of Applied Aviation Studies. His research interests are in team performance and training, pilot training and performance, human-robot interaction, and simulation methodology. Dr. Jentsch has co-authored over 200 publications and presentations; this is his second edited book.

About the Author
Richard Baxter (1615-1691) was a prominent English churchman and peacemaker who sought unity among Protestants. Born in Rowton to parents who undervalued education, he was largely self-taught. At age twenty-three he was ordained into the Church of England. Baxter became even better known for his prolific writing, with more than two hundred works to his name. His devotional classic, "The Saints' Everlasting Rest", was one of the most widely read books of the century. When asked what deviations should be permitted from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, he created an entirely new one, "Reformed Liturgy", in two weeks. His autobiography and his pastoral guide, "The Reformed Pastor", are still widely read today.
