A STRANGE BREW...

My eldest daughter found a copy of this in her mailbox. It looked like a religious to her. So she called me to ask me if I had ever heard of it. [She asked me because I'm retired from teaching history and theology.] I told her its been around in one form or another since the 1860's. It was written by one of the Founders of the Seventh Day Adventists. " Later editions were written largely for a non-Adventist audience to be used as an evangelistic tool."
It's reading of Scripture is extremely literalisst simplistic - mixed with White's alleged 'visions'. To a traditioinal Christian ... Protestant, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox - this is really strange territory. The theology is not internally consistent at all. I would never pay any money for it. Only because it was given away did it come into our possession.

Have a dictionary close by

I too "mysteriously" received this in the mail. At first I thought the mail man was a religious fanatic, but that was not the case. Other neighbors also mentioned receiving it just about a week after the Jehovah's made their semi annual pilgrimage up and down the block. I have no issue with how I received it or who I received it from. My issue is that it's impossible to read without having a dictionary by your side. Yes, it may be easy reading for a college English professor, but for the rest of us (lay-people) it's an exercise in futility. Reading "The Great Controversy" makes reading Shakespeare seem like your reading "The Cat In The Hat". Maybe next week I'll find a secret decoder ring in my mail box............

A Free Reprint of Cult Gibberish and 19th-Century Ravings

If, as I did, you received this book as unsolicited by mail, I'd suggest web-searching the publisher. Their (7th-day Adventists, it seems) outreach program is targeting people in the San Francisco Bay area, New York City, Washington, and Charlotte, NC.
It is an awful book written by a prolific ignoramus.
If you would like to read much more interesting and knowledgeable material about the fall of Jerusalem, try something written by Josephus. If you would like to read about Christianity, read Saint Paul's letters (the oldest part of the New Testament) in the order they were written. If you would like to read the two, non-biblical, references to a Christ that were written no more than 100 years after his supposed existence, read Tacitus and Josephus. If you can read (stomach) the White book, you should have an easy time reading these superior documents.
