New York midwife Sarah Brandt is upset when she learns that someone has been inquiring at Hope Mission about Catherine, the abandoned girl who is now her ward. The woman asking claims to be working on behalf of Catherine’s mother, who wants to be reunited with her daughter. Sarah will not simply hand Catherine over to an unknown woman, so she asks her police-officer friend, Frank Malloy, to investigate. When he goes to the woman’s boardinghouse in Chelsea, he finds her dead. This is hardly bad news for Sarah, since her custody will not be challenged, but her sense of justice compels her to look into the murder. It was about time Malloy....I DO!

When Victoria Thompson announced Frank and Sarah will be getting together in this book it became the longest year of my life. I was eager to get my hands on it. All I can say is I LOVE IT. It was fast paced, I had to stop at one point and take a break. I felt it was taking me through twists and turns and it kept surprising me. I have to admit that I was afraid of two things: that it would be too sappy and maybe out of character just so they can come together and therefore not credible. Not because I don't think highly of the author because I do think very highly of her, but because she had express her distress about how to bring them together after throwing so many obstacles at them. But Ms.Thompson should be very proud of this book. Every character stays true to themselves but you see the BEST of each of them. Mrs. Malloy had a great scene with Sarah where you see the smart woman she is and how capable she is of being objective and see things in the right light putting her feelings aside. I have to say I even grew fond of the new characters and the villains were incredibly interesting. And of course Sarah and Malloy! All I can say it was perfect the way they come together, IF you REALLY have read all the books and know their personalities you know this was perfect. I was worried I would feel to satisfied and not interested in more. But heck no! yes there's a bit of closure but MS Thompson left a door open for a new chapter of adventures , I cannot wait to see these two trying to solve murders as a couple. GOOD JOB MS THOMPSON.

I lost sleep over this book. I could not put it down as I kept reading to see what the next twist was. The plot was tight and the characters given depth without a lot of extra embellishment. The setting in New York and the social mores of class relationships supported the action without heavy handed judgement about right or wrong.
I liked the growth of the relationships among all the characters. The good in the characters came out in the end, especially in the Brandt family. Sarah had to have good parents to be as smart, independent and caring as she is. The clues about the murders were well thought out. The victims were real characters who rated sympathy and understanding.
The ending was very well done. Almost happily ever after but lots of room for more books about Sarah and Malloy.

Intriguing with a surprise ending.

I did enjoy this latest Sarah Brandt mystery, but I have to admit that I figured out the murderer(s)? early on in the book. But that did not spoil the book for me as I so enjoy Ms. Thompson's writing and her fast-paced plotting. And the ending was a wonderful surprise too. Ms. Thompson's sense of time and place is spot on and she portrays her era (New York City-late 19 century) very convincingly. I really like Sarah Brandt and Frank Malloy. They make a formidable crime-fighting team. This book delves into the life of Sarah's ward - 4 year old Catherine, and we find out how she ended up as a foundling in the settlement home for women where Sarah Brandt volunteers. Unfortunately, Catherine's resurfacing past puts her in grave danger and Sarah and Frank must protect her from those who want to harm her. We are also treated to a closer look at Sarah's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Felix Decker. It was nice to see a bit more of them in this book. This is an excellent historical mystery series.
