Great for Students

I am a student who had to read this book and I couldn't understand most of the stuff Shakespeare was writing. We first started to read some other books with the Old English type writing and I got a C- in this class because I couldnt understand it. We just started reading Romeo and Juliet and I had the same problem so I bought this book. Boy, did it help me! I got an A in my class! Another feature which I liked was how the layout is put side-by-side so if you have to read during class, you'll be able to know where everyone is and if you dont understand it, just go to the other side.

No Fear is the best Shakespeare Ever

This is only partially a review of the story, but mostly a review on how much I love the No Fear series. It's SO useful. You have Shakespeare on one page, and the 'translation' into modern English on one page. I understand Shakespeare so much better now. I thought I understood Shakespeare when I read version where you have a footnote at the bottom saying what 'grandshire phrase' or something means. I did get the gist of it, but now I understand what the characters are saying and feeling, and I get all the little jokes. I can appreciate Shakespeare now, which was impossible before (then again, I'm only 12, it's probably easier for other people).
Not to mention in other versions I would read a little bit, glance down at the footnotes, read, glance down, re-read to find the word in the footnote, et cetera and it was very tedious. Now I just read a page of Shakespeare and then a page of modern, or vice versa. I do vice versa because then I understand how the character feels before reading the lines out loud, making this version very useful for putting on the play.
There is one problem. In most editions, you have various essays and notes. They don't have this in here. I don't take of stars for this because I personally never read the essays, but some people might.
Anyway, the story itself. Shakespeare is very poetic, and you can appreciate it more if you know what he's talking about. How ever, I hate 'love at first sight' with a burning passion. If you get over that, the characters and plot are engaging.
I read this because I was in the play. But this edition is so good I'm going to read other Shakespeare plays for my own enjoyment.

I am a high school English teacher looking at the different versions of classics texts available for Kindle (fire), so my review will not be for the play itself, but rather for the eBook--readability, layout, price, and other features.

This version of Romeo and Juliet is my favorite 99 cent version for several reasons. First, there are links to each act and scene. Next, the page layout is clean and easy to read with spaces between each speaker. Finally, the line formatting is in the correct iambic pentameter format, though there are no line numbers. There are no annotations or explanations, but none of the good 99 cent versions provide that either. Bottom line, easy to use!

Graphic But Fantastic Account of War as a Marine

E.B. Sledge brings the WWII exploits of a US Marine to us in all it's bloody, smelly, shocking, and heart-rending glory. Although today largely unknown, the Palau Campaign and specifically the battle for the island of Peleliu was just as contentious as the later battles of Okinawa (in which the author also fought) and Iwo Jima. Sledge does a fantastic job of bringing the war down to the level of the individual and really puts you in the fox hole so that you can relive the horrors of war with him. Although Sledge often recounts how he hates war and wishes that the jewels of a nations youth shouldn't have to be used as cannon fodder, he is by no means a passifist - he was a US Marine and is proud of his pedigree.

This book is a must read for anyone who has ever looked down the business end of weapon, especially those who are or have been Marines, as well as those of us who are simply interested in military history. However, this book isn't for the faint of heart as Sledge brings the all-to-real tales of war at its grittiest and most graphic as he recounts time and again the deaths and/or prevations of both U.S. Marine and Japanese soldier alike. War is hell and Sledge reveals it, sometimes, at its most darkest.

If you've ever had a friend or acquaintance whom you felt you had an odd, quirky and inexplicable kinship, (e.g. you both liked donuts, or could talk about uncomfortable topics like catheters) but you also felt like they viewed the world through a very different lens -- my guess is that they would likely get along with this author Valerie Gregg. Cher once commented that watching the actor Nicholas Cage is like watching a train wreck -- you just can't stop watching. This book is like that. If you like people who are unsentimental about enduring their own chemo; make jokes about things like death, vulnerability and fast food; don't think that having kids is a miracle, and is willing to give more than they receive -- then you should buy this book.

Richard A. Goldthwaite is professor emeritus of history at the Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of The Building of Renaissance Florence: An Economic and Social History and Wealth and the Demand for Art in Italy, 1300–1600, both also published by Johns Hopkins.

Outstanding Scholarship; 4.5 Stars

A comprehensive examination of the Florentine economy across about 4 centuries, including both Medieval and Renaissance Florence. This topic is of particular interest because Florence played an important role in the economic history of Europe and also because the richness of surviving documentation provides more information about the economic history of Florence than any other European city during these periods. The basic outline is relatively straightforward. Situated in one of the most heavily urbanized parts of western Europe, Florence began to flourish as part of the commercial revolution that occurred in Medieval Europe. Florence became a leading industrial center producing woolen cloth and later silk fabrics, participating in a broad trade across western Europe and the Mediterranean. The expanding Florentine trade network led the entrepreneurial Florentines into a range of mercantile and banking activities across Europe, including major provision of credit to many monarchs and the Papacy. For a substantial period, Florence was a major economic power in Europe. By about 1600, the growth of the European economy and the vigor of other regions, particularly the Netherlands and Britain, led to a relative decline in the importance of the Florentine economy and Florence became a provincial center.

Motivated by a desire to explore as many facets of the Florentine economy as possible, and as deeply as possible, Goldthwaite does not use a chronological approach. He presents a series of well written and extremely well documented chapters addressing a series of crucial topics. He opens with an overview of Italian and European economic development, emphasizing Florence, to about 1300. By this time, the Florentines were established well on the European economic scene. Goldthwaite then presents a series of chapters covering international merchant banking, the shifts in trading patterns across the Medieval through Renaissance periods, the mechanics of banking and government financing, the structure and function of the Florentine industrial and local economy, and a good deal of relevant social history.

There is some overlap among chapters and, inevitably, some repetition. Goldthwaite, however, is very successful in conveying the richness of economic activity in and the dynamism of Renaissance Florence. While this book is not organized as a chronological narrative, he also gives a very good sense of the many changes that occurred in the structure of the European economy across the centuries he is discussing. Goldthwaite is very careful not to present Florance as paradigmatic and when possible, offers comparisons with other cities and states of these periods. The cumulative effect is to provide a great deal of insight the nature and changing character of the European economy of Medieval and Early Modern Europe.

While this book is factually fairly dense, it is well written and Goldthwaite is careful to avoid use of economic jargon. He is careful as well to point out where deficiencies in knowledge exist. This book, however, is written with a scholarly audience in mind, and to get the most out of it, a reasonably good knowledge of Medieval and Renaissance history in needed.

Amazing ... Has a lot of applicability

This had a lot of application in how industry can change give global stress on a local system. I really enjoyed the book and found it very readable, even though I I only read a few popular books on the subject. I did get the kindle version, but this book is so excellent that I will get a physical version and start marking it.

Seduction in Silk

I loved the story. I loved the curse. I loved how it was woven into the story. I loved how it was investigated and how it was cleared up. I hated the heroine. ok hated was too harsh a word. I am a huge fan of Jo Beverley. I have read everything she has published and for the most part was never left wanting. But Claris had no redeeming value. Yes she raised her brothers. Yes she fell in love with Perry. But always in a context of what she got out of it. Marriage in all of Ms. Beverley's other books showed the hero and Heroine becoming a team. They worked together to make their lives better. This couple never did. Perry gave and Claris took. Even at the end of the book where Perry had stood up to his father to give Claris the Manor and lost everything. She welcomed him home but she never let him forget that she was the boss. Not a team.. she was in charge.. he was tolerated. Her distrust of men and marriage was never put aside. She even put her and Ellie's life in danger to show Perry he was not going to tell her what to do. Then when he rescued them she blamed him for not dropping everything to wait on her. As if it was his fault they had been attacked. I tried to like her. I will probly reread Seduction in Silk to see if she gets better. The story was a 5 star story. The heroine was a 1 star. That is why I gave the book 3 stars.

Gentle Seduction

The story and the romance unfolds slowly (and that's not a criticism), making the arranged marriage story more acceptable. Claris is slowly convinced to marry Perry, with him pushing her "maternal" button to overcome her resistance. The two circle each other as intimate strangers, with Claris first moving to Perriam Manor and then to Town. In each place, she finds barriers to a happy life--an unfortunate memorial at the manor and Perry's livelihood working for Rothgar and the King. The other obstacle is Claris' near-obession with a family curse.

It is Claris who decides after seeing Perry caring for her brothers to consummate the marriage. Perry continues to seduce her in Town, showering her with parties and sight-seeing. His work, however, does drive them apart. She separately pursues her quest to understand the events leading to the family curse, trying to understand her aunt and her mother and their time in London as young girls from the country. That search does lead to danger but resolution of that furthers the deepening relationship between Perry and Claris.

For those who read this for the Malloren connection, Jo Beverley does bring back quite a number of the Mallorens and associates to advance the plot, particularly when Clarisa comes to Town. They are instrumental in smoothing Claris' introduction to the haute volee.

I love the Malloren world with the dual settings of Town and country, where court life is glittering but satisfaction is often found in the intimate world of the country. Seduction in Silk contains explores the two worlds in several ways--mainly Claris is country and Perry is Town. It seems natural at the end that both come to the point that each finds a place in the other's comfort zone.

Very Unpleasant Heroine

It was really hard to finish this, but I kept hoping it would get better. I knew I was in trouble on page 34, when the heroine turned psycho and threatened the H with a pistol. For no reason. As if a commoner would really threaten to murder in cold blood a nobleman. He returns to press his suit again, and she actually does shoot at him. He, and everyone else, takes this all in stride. Not the way any normal people react to near homicide. Naturally there's a reason for her psychotic behavior, but the rationale is thin and unsatisfying. Mostly, she comes across as a miserable nut and he as a dunce for his pursuit of her. Without indulging in spoilers, let me just say these damaged females are becoming tiresome in my romance novels.

If you like Zombie genre you will love this

A really good book, very fast paced even a little to fast at times. Would have been much better with some more character development, but what do you want, from a Zombie book. Loved the idea of following the Zombie mind, reminded me of I, Zombie by Hugh Howey.
