Meet the Philosophers of Ancient Greece

This easy to read book is a "Who is Who" in the development of western thought. It treats more than 50 of the ancient Greek philosophers and also explains the significance of 14 of the most well-known historical sites in ancient Greece. Each topic is individually treated by an international expert and, although written in a non-academic style, each topic has annotated footnotes which can lead the serious reader to more formal research. This handy little book is a must-have for readers and travelers to the region with even a casual interest in the history of western philosophy.

a broad overview, but you get the flavor

This is a somewhat unusual introductory book to ancient Greek philosophy, for a few reasons. First of all, it is actually an edited set of individual contributions by a number of scholars, as opposed to being written by a single author. Yet, the essays are short (sometimes a bit too short) and meant to be accessible by the general public. Second, it doesn't cover just "Greek" philosophy, but also poetry (Homer, Aesop), the Roman world, and some of the early Christian philosophers active in Roman times. Lastly, the book ends with a section on archeological sites worth visiting if one is interested in ancient philosophy. All in all, this makes for a really nice companion in preparation for a philosophically-themed vacation to Greece (which is why I downloaded it to begin with). You won't get much detail concerning the thoughts of any given philosopher, but rather just enough to taste the flavor of their ideas. Each chapter has a good section of suggested readings for people who wish to dig deeper.

SLEEP DON'T COME EASY is the combined efforts of JD Mason and Victor McGlothin; they pen separate mysteries that are enticing to those who appreciate a good thriller.

"The Lazarus Man" by JD Mason is an intriguing whodunit surrounding the death of Toni Robbins. She was murdered on the streets and there was an eyewitness to the crime - an insane homeless man called Lazarus. But, Lazarus can't trust what's real and what's not as he deals with moments of mental clarity plaguing him. Will he be able to identify the killer and will his testimony be credible?

"Tomorrow's Edge", Victor McGlothin's tale, has a twist. Vera Miles, a private investigator, is approached by a man who wants her to help identify him and the person he murdered. The investigation takes her on the path of drug dealers, crooked cops and a FBI cover-up. Vera starts to wonder if she's gotten in too deep. Who is this mystery man who has turned her world upside down?

I am a fan of both JD Mason and Victor McGlothin, and it was great to see them come together in this genre. Although these were short stories, the delivery left me feeling as fulfilled as I would have been reading a full-length novel. Mason's plot engaged me while McGlothin's colorful characters kept my interest piqued. I would recommend this one.

Long live the Dynamic Two

Two novels; one showcase - this book was absolute enjoyment.
Ms. Mason for her use of time; Mr. McGlothin for excellent pacing and the colorful cast that was conjured to play against the grit and no nonsense of Vera, his main character.
The length of her chapters was a demonstration of a fluid and surefooted pace; thirty plus sweet morsels that propelled the tale with a sense of excitement at the end of each. I was sucked in by the third paragraph. One of her gifts is detailing the mechanics of the male psyche, most notably in the creation of Lazarus.
His conversational expression was a flavorful treat. This thriller played gently before my eyes, allowing for striking contrast when the harmony was disrupted. Soothing and sleuthing storytelling in its finest form. Once underway, the journey is a fantastic one;just sit back and trust him to take care of you until beyond the last page.
An excellent pairing, both authors managed to draw emotion at some unexpected junctures. The time I spent with them brought about an unexpected empathy with some of the characters and a serious disdain for others.

i'm still reafing the book the first story was pretty good I'm struggling with the second story it's kind of dull maybe I will rate it again when I'm done.

Professor Tibor Machan is a superb theorist and author

I have long enjoyed Professor Tibor Machan's work. He is a philosopher who does practical and down-to-earth work on free markets and related topics. Professor Machan grew up in wartime (and later occupied) Hungary and learned first-hand about the ills of the Soviet central-planning system. This is another one of several fine books on free markets, trade and a broad Libertarian philosophy. As a philosopher he writes with precision and care and supplies numerous examples and practical analogies. I highly recommend this book and the many others he has written.

How can this book possibly sell at these prices. i would but it in a heart beat if it was reasonably priced. I must be missing something. The more esoteric the book I seek to purchase the more likely it is to be priced in the hundreds of dollars!! Can anyone explain this?

I do not think there is anyone who wants to go through all of school without anybody there knowing anything about them. Everybody wants friends, it is just a matter of finding them. This is a book that will teach you how to be better in social situations so that you, too, can have friends and/or be popular. It shows that it is not too hard to make friends. There are just a couple of things that you have to do differently.

I have always considered myself a bit of a shy guy so after seeing this book I thought that I would take a chance on it. I found that this book had loads of helpful info on how to make friends and be more popular. With it you learn tips and tricks on how to approach people, give a good first impression, improve your humor, and a whole bunch of other stuff. The book lays everything out in an easy to understand and simple to follow way. I recommend this book to anyone looking to make a few new friends.
