One Miss and Two Hits

Three stories, all historicals and all good stories.
"The Beauty And The Brute" was the first offering in this anthology. The premise (arranged marriage, a rude 18 year old boy to an innocent 13 year old girl) was pretty good, but I had issues with the way the heroine went about seeking "revenge". Nothing in this story made me like her much. She was beautiful, the toast of the ton, but I didn't see much of her sweeter side. The concept made sense, but missed me. Someone else, of course, may totally be on board with this one so it might just be me.

"How To Seduce A Wife" By Kate Pearce is next and the reason I read this anthology. She didn't disappoint me, giving me another book in the "Simply" series with two completely different characters. I love this story. The idea of a man attempting to reform so far that he becomes too conventional, too BORING, was a hilarious idea and I love the way Ms. Pearce reveals this to him. These two people were wonderful characters and their happy ending was both erotic and satisfying.

"Not Quite A Courtesan" was the first time I've read Maggie Robinson, but it may not be the last. I enjoyed this story immensely. I love the idea of the repressed matron given a chance to experience passion. And I adore the way this story unfolded little by little. Certainly conventions are swept away for the happy ending, but the story is so good, I don't care.

All in all, I think this anthology is worth the money.

Come on Virginia, let your heroines grow up

I have to agree with the reviewer who said two hits and a miss. A wide miss. Virginia Henley is one of my favorite authors, but it's time to let her heroines grow up. A sexy read, with a sixteen year old heroine, is just creepy. It may be historically correct, but it's still creepy.

Sexy stories about women fulfilling their fantasies!

"How to Seduce a Wife" by Kate Pearce
Louisa (the heroine) is from a wealthy family but not from nobility. She is intelligent and loves to read. Although Nicholas (the hero) married Louisa for her quiet demeanor, obvious intelligence, and huge dowry rather than for her looks, he thinks her smile is lovely and likes her warm brown eyes. Nicholas was a notorious rake in his early days. However, after watching his wastrel father destroy himself and those closest to him with his gambling and flagrant womanizing, he vowed to be nothing like him. He aims for stability, both financially as well as personally. His wife is very unhappy with their unsatisfactory sex life but is unsure how to communicate that to her husband so she sublimates her desires by reading gothic romances. Nicholas thinks that he is doing right by his wife by not ravishing her and overwhelming her with his masculinity and sexuality. It is somewhat of a shock to him when Louisa first tries to clue him in. However, after talking to others, he quickly realizes that he needs to figure out how to fix the situation and take action. I like that it didn't take him long to figure things out. I also liked the gradual seduction of Louisa's sense - given the time restraints of a short story. I also liked the fact that Nicholas read one of his wife's romances to see what some of her erotic triggers might be. I also love that he made one of his wife's favorite fantasies come true in a very real and vivid way. This is the first thing I've read by this author and have been reluctant in the past to try some of her books based on the content but I liked the focus in this book on the hero & heroine.

"Beauty and the Brute" by Virginia Henley
The hero & heroine in this story went through with an arranged marriage in name only when she was 13 and he was 18. The main story takes place 3 years later when she is 16 and he is 21 and they have been apart for those 3 years. Some readers had a problem with the ages of the main characters but I didn't for a few reasons. First, I realized that back then (circa 1719) & with lifespans being what they were, that was the norm. Comparing people that age then with people that age nowadays is like comparing apples and oranges. Also, the age difference between the two was only 5 years - for me that's different from an old man deflowering a young girl.
After exchanging wedding vows, he goes off on his Grand Tour and she goes to a London academy for young ladies. Sarah can't get over the very bad first impression of him. Charles was a typical thoughtless 18yr old boy and said some insulting, snarky things to Sarah when he had just met her. Perhaps an older, more mature woman would have either brushed off his comments or else set him straight, but for a young girl those comments stuck with her. During their time apart, they both matured, physically and in all other ways. Sarah's figure became more womanly and less girlish. She also gained more self-confidence and became very intelligent and known for her fine wit. Charles likewise became more manly in appearance and, after traveling, sickness, and being exposed to different cultures, gained an empathy for others and depth as a person. Charles is captivated by Sarah when he first sees her after 3 years, not realizing she is his wife. When he does find out who she is, it only strengthens his resolve to win her heart. Sarah, by comparison, is intent on plotting revenge for the way he acted toward her when they were younger. Her plan is "love'em and leave'em". In the end, of course, she falls for him just as much as he fell for her. I was very happy that, perhaps because of the story length, there was not a long estrangement at the end.

Prudence Thorn is a prudish widow of 10 years. It takes collector and auctioneer Darius Shaw to awaken her sexuality. I liked the hero in this story much more than the heroine.

Bruno S. Sergi teaches International Economics at the University of Messina, Italy. He is a Visiting Fellow with the University of Greenwich Business School, London and a Fellow with the Contemporary Europe Research Centre at the University of Melbourne, Australia. His research interests include economic policy, transition economics and European economics. He has lectured in Eastern Europe and in the United States, has published several books and has research experience at various Central Banks and the International Monetary Fund. William T. Bagatelas teaches International Relations, International Business and Political Science at City University Bratislava, Slovakia. He is a Visiting Professor of Business Ethics at Central European University in Budapest, Lecturer of International Relations, European Union Studies and Political Economy at the New Anglo-American College in Prague and Lecturer in Globalization and Business Ethics Studies at the University of New York in Prague. He is a former researcher with a national non-profit organization in the US that advised the US Congress and Senate, and has co-edited four books concerning Central and Eastern European business, economics, politics and ethics. Jana Kubicova teaches International Taxation and Public Finance at the Faculty of National Economy, University of Economics Bratislava, Slovakia. One of the best Oz books!

This is perhaps the most exciting Oz book in the series. The story is action-packed from beginning to end, which is a change from some of the earlier books where the characters wander around aimlessly without much happening. It starts off with a bang when Queen Ann Soforth organizes her Army of Oogaboo and sets out to conquer the world with only eighteen officers and one private. At the same time, Betsy Bobbin and her mule Hank (appearing for the first time!) are shipwrecked and land in the Rose Kingdom, where they meet the Shaggy Man, who has set out from Oz to find his lost brother. When they encounter Ann's army, they all travel to the Nome King's dominions to conquer him and steal his wealth. Adventures abound and edge-of-your-seat struggles take place before everyone ends up in Oz for the happy ending. For only 99 cents you can't miss this one!

The *Emerald City of Oz* -- book 6 in the series - was supposed to be the last in the series. This showed in Book 7 - the Patchwork Girl of Oz -- which was pretty Meh. Purchased this one b/c we are overseas and could get it on Kindle and it turned out to be one of my son's favorites in the series. Less wordplay than previous Oz books and more action. Seems to have rekindled his love for the series.

The Kindle edition by Eltanin publishing is great as they include all the original illustrations - in color where they were color illustrations in the original. I know there are free editions available on kindle, but the Eltanin editions are worth the 99 cents.

Very Reminiscent

When I was in elementary school I loved reading this series. Recently, for something different I have been reading some of the series again. These books are great light reading for adults who love the series. I had forgotten this particular one and really enjoyed reading it again. I love all the happy endings in these sweet books, especially this one.

I think that this book has the wrong title . It's still an amazing book. I had a great time reading the book. I love how they finally share their opinions with each other.I love the details and delicate text. You should read this book you are going to love it and not be able to stop .

My 11 year old daughter loves this series, She can read this in a couple of day and its better than playing video games (to my judgement). They were delivered super fast and they are way cheaper via Amazon than the local book store.
